Interview with Ulysses "Useless" Gomez
Useless' exploits have earned him urban legend status within MMA and Jiu-Jitsu circles, due to his prankster personality online, coupled with the fact that he's been successfully competing on the grappling circuit for years.

04.28.09 Interview with Ulysses "Useless" Gomez Author: Bevois
<<prev  page 1  page 2

will only play better.

Bevois: Not a lot of people know this, but you got Dany Lauzon beat for being the youngest fighter aired on a UFC broadcast. You and Sim Go had some epic battles during the UFC's "On The Mat" with Marc Laimon segments. What was your final record against Sim Go in those UFC broadcasts?

Useless: *laughs* … Yeah, but Sim has us both beat, because he's a couple years younger than me.

Bevois: Sim Go has been one of your longest-lasting training partners. How nice is it having an ADCC North American Trials champion black belt, who is your size, to train with when preparing for MMA fights against guys who are similar in stature?

Useless: Sim is one of the best training partners that I have. Not only is he a great grappler, but he's also willing to do what it takes to help me get ready for my fight. He'll kickbox with me, wrestle with me, grapple, it doesn’t matter. Even though Sim beats me up every time we train, I enjoy it, because I know that I won't fight a better grappler than him. He truly is a great guy and I'm glad that I get the chance to work with him.

Bevois: Jason "Carp" Carpenter is another one of your close friends and longtime training partners at Cobra Kai. He also made an impressive MMA debut at PFC. He won his debut at PFC 11 by submission in 43 seconds, while you won your debut at PFC 7 in 41 seconds. Did you ever ask him what took him so long?

Useless: *laughs* … Carp is a great guy! I remember being in his corner for that fight and even though he won in 43 seconds it felt like forever! I don't know why! I was super nervous for him. Sometimes I get more nervous for my friends fights, than I do for my own fights. A couple of times when I watch some of my training partners fight, I can feel my body start to shake a little. That never happens before my own fights, which is weird.

Bevois: When should we expect to see "Carp" back in action at the PFC?

Useless: He's recovering from a hand injury, but I think in July.

Bevois: A month ago at Shooto Tradition 6, Shinichi "BJ" Kojima turned in a "Submission of the Year" type performance over Yuki Shoujou, solidifying his place atop the flyweight rankings. Have you ever thought about fighting overseas in Japan in Shooto against fighters such as BJ and Yuki?

Useless: I grew up watching Shooto, because at that time, it was the only organization that had flyweights on their cards. I would fight BJ or Yuki in Shooto or the PFC, it doesn't matter to me. I think they are both great fighters and I would love to test myself against them.

Bevois: The Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Kendall Grove is your former roommate. Have you two ever discussed having him carry you out to the ring in a backpack-type harness, a la Tommy Davidson in "Ace Ventura 2 – When Nature Calls"?

Useless: *laughs* … Naw, but maybe we can bust out a Jay and Silent Bob type costume!

Bevois: You have trained with some of the very best fighters in the worlds of MMA, jiu-jitsu, boxing, and kickboxing. Who are some of your favorite fighters in each discipline?

Useless: In MMA I would have to say GSP, BJ, Wand, Overeem, Kid Yamamoto, Urijah, Torres… actually there's way too many to list!

For BJJ of course Marcelo Garcia and Marc. Shaolin is one of my favorites. Also, Leo Vieira and my training partner Sim Go.

In Boxing I get to train with Wayne McCullough on a weekly basis, so I'm a huge fan of his. But man, I also like watching old school Roberto Duran, Morales, and Barrera. But as of fighters right now, I like Cotto and Pacquiao even though he keeps on beating my Mexican idols!

And for Kickboxing I gotta say Mike Zambidis!

Bevois: Two big title bouts are coming up in May. Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton in boxing and Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida in MMA. What are your thoughts on those two fights?

Useless: For Pacquiao and Hatton, I just hope it's a good exciting fight. I could care less on who wins, just as long as it's an exciting fight. For Rashad and Lyoto, I won't be rooting for one over the other either. I just wanna see who's game plan will prevail. I like both guys and appreciate both of their styles.

Bevois: Now, no interview you with you would be complete without at least one reference to the Internet and the forums that you've made famous. Who are some of your favorite trolls and/or troll jobs throughout the years?

Useless: *laughs* … I dunno man, every year someone comes out with an awesome troll job. People take themselves way too seriously sometimes, so I appreciate trolls for the comedy relief that they bring.

Bevois: Give me a quick 'True or False' on the following three Internet rumors:

-Did you, Bollea, and Laimon show up in singlets to compete at a wrestling tournament?

Useless: True!

-Were you involved in a post-UFC 66 mêlée that resulted in you KO'ing former two-time world champion boxer Fernando Vargas at the MGM?

Useless: *laughs* … Naw, that's a False.

-Is it true that "Jungle Love" was the mad notes written by God herself?

Useless: *laughs* … Gotta love Dogma!

Bevois: Before we wrap this up, tell the world something interesting about Marc Laimon that not a lot of people already know!

Useless: He has an incredible memory and he loves guacamole!

Bevois: Thanks a lot Uly. We hope you have a speedy recovery and see you back in the ring soon!

Useless: No problem man…thanks for having me!
