04.23.09 Long Beach Fight Night Author: Christopher Landeros
Sunday night De La O Jujitsu black belt Thomas Kenny (12-4) would capture is first win since making his return to ring over 3 months ago. Standing in his way that night was journeymen fighter Erick Meaders (3-10-1), Meaders would be riding on a high since KO’ing his opponent in his last outing to the ring but that night he would himself outmatched by the Brazilian jujitsu fighter.

Coming in aggressive with his strikes Kenny would waste no time and use punches and the leg kick to set up the takedown all night. Meaders on the other hand would play counter puncher and wait to sprawl whenever a shot took place. Although it would take some work Kenny would eventually get the Monrovia native down where for most of the fight Meaders would play defense against the Black belts submission attacks. In the end it would be Kenny’s aggression and ground control that would give him the unanimous decision victory.

In the co main event European native Tarec Saffiedine (4-0) would need a little less then a minute to dispense of Cage of Fire veteran Scott Rose (1-1). As the bell would sound for round one you could immediately tell Rose did not want to be in there as he would be hesitant to engage his opponent. Saffiedine on the other hand would bring the fight to him landing punches before engaging in a clinch and taking his opponent to the mat. Once he secured side mount Saffiedine would lock up an arm triangle that would face Rose to tap.

In what was fight of the night Darrel “The Mongoose” Montague (3-1) would bounce back from his last lost in the ring in devastating fashion as he would KO his opponent wrestling stand out and Bodyshop trained fighter Maurice “Syko” Eazel (6-9).

In this 130lbs match up Montague and Eazel would both land strikes and highlight real slams that would woo the audience for most of the fight. Even though early on it would seem the Eazel would take control of the action it would be Montague who would take over as the action wore on. Montague would rock Eazel several times during the fight with punches and knees before finishing him with a flying knee that would KO the BodyShop fighter with less then a minute left in the fight.

In Featherweight action Martial Art Innovations fighter Juan Rivas (0-2) would nab the first win of his career as he would outpoint fellow CXF veteran Andrew “Mon Chi Chi” Patlan (0-1).

Throughout the fight it would be evident that Rivas was the stronger of the two as he would continuously stop Patlan attacks. Anytime Patlan was able to put him on his back Rivas would go for chokes or just stand up to avoid anything his opponent would throw at him. In the end as everyone would expect to hear the judges render a split decision they would find themselves surprised as the scorecards would reveal a unanimous decision for Rivas.

Fighting that night at a catch weight of 180lbs Chute Boxe fighter Fernando Bettega (4-3) would use the guillotine choke to tap Lake Forrest Subfighter John “Voodoo” Walsh (5-2).

In a battle of nicknames team Wildman fighter Lamar “monster” Jiles (1-2) would use strikes, the takedown and ground and pound to stop Fight Night veteran Keneti “Monsta” Faagata (1-0).

In his fifth consecutive win USMC Sgt. Vince Ortiz would weather the early onslaught of strikes and submission attempts before choking out Hesperia native and American Jujitsu Academy fighter Fabian “Wolverine” Diaz (2-1).

PFC veteran and De LA O Jujitsu trained fighter Scott “The Sza” Brommage (1-4) would use the top position and punches to stop Throwdown Elite trained fighter Darby “The Edge” Faulkner (1-0).

Finally on the card Many “Bam Bam” Lara (1-0) would need less then a round to finish off newcomer Anthony “A-Train” Appello. Using the takedown and top position effectively Lara would attempt to submit his opponent but switch up his attack and force the ref to stop the fight due to punches late in the first round.
