09.25.09 ShoMMA - Strikeforce Challengers 3 Author: Bevois
On Friday, September 25, 2009, Strikeforce will make its first foray into the Sooner State with the third installment of ShoMMA - Strikeforce Challengers. The event will take place at the SpiritBank Event Center in Bixby, Oklahoma, which is a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is the second major MMA event to take place in the state of Oklahoma this month with UFC Fight Night 19 taking place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma just nine days ago. The five main card bouts at ShoMMA - Strikeforce Challengers 3 are scheduled to air on Showtime in the United States at 11:00 p.m. EST/PST.

The main event of the evening will be a middleweight showdown between two of the more promising 185-pound prospects in the sport. Zak Cummings, who stepped in to replace an injured Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, will put his perfect 10-0 record on the line when he squares off with the decorated U.S. Army Green Beret, Tim Kennedy. Kennedy holds an impressive 10-2 record with his only two losses coming against UFC and Strikeforce veteran Scott Smith in his first professional fight over 8 years ago and then a decision loss to Strikeforce middleweight title challenger Jason "MayheM" Miller almost two years ago in the main event of HDNet Fights - Reckless Abandon. Kennedy holds a 1-1 overall record against Miller and a rubber match between the two could happen sometime next year. This will be the promotional debut for Cummings, while Kennedy will look to go 2-0 in Strikeforce after stopping Nick Thompson with punches in June.

Also on the main card will be a heavyweight match up between K-1 legend Ray "Sugarfoot" Sefo and UFC veteran Kevin "The Shaman" Jordan. Sefo is a native of New Zealand and has been a professional kickboxer that has engaged in 75 matches since 1995. In that time he has amassed a lengthy resume, which includes being a five-time Muay Thai world champion and an eight-time K-1 World Grand Prix Finals tournament participant. This will be his second MMA bout, since winning his debut fight against Min Soo Kim via head kick KO over 4 years ago. Coincidentally, Kim is the same man UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar made his successful MMA debut against two summers ago. This time around, Sefo will be facing two-time UFC veteran Jordan, who has compiled a record of 11-7 since making his professional MMA debut over 9 years ago. Jordan is coming into this bout fresh off of a Unanimous Decision victory over UFC 1 legend Pat Smith at ASC 1 on July 31st.

Also on the main card will be a welterweight bout between the undefeated Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley, who has won all three of his matches via submission since making his debut in February of this year. He will be taking on UFC veteran and TUF 7 coach (Team Rampage) Zach "The Lisbon Outlaw" Light. In a 147-pound Catchweight Bout, two local Tulsa area natives will clash, as Thomas Longacre meets Travis Calanoc. Longacre and Calanoc both have perfect 4-0 records and used to train together. This bout should be the fan favorite of the evening, as these two men are popular in the area with many local fight fans wanting to see this bout for quite some time. The final bout on the main card, that is guaranteed to be aired on Showtime, will take place in the heavyweight division. It will feature two-time Olympic wrestler and former Oklahoma State wrestling star Daniel Cormier in his highly-anticipated MMA debut against fellow MMA newcomer Gary Frazier. Frazier is a native of Oklahoma who won two state wrestling titles in high school. Cormier has been training with fellow NCAA standout wrestlers and MMA stars Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Cain Velasquez at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California to prepare for his debut, while Frazier won an amateur MMA bout via TKO.
