On Saturday, October 10, 2009, the WEC will come to the state of Texas. Just three weeks after the UFC hosted its most recent event in the Lone Star State in the home venue of the Dallas Mavericks, WEC 43 - Cerrone vs. Henderson is set to take place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, which is the home venue of the San Antonio Spurs. The main card airs live on Versus in the United States at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST.
The main event will be for the WEC interim lightweight title, as Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone is set to lock horns with Ben Henderson. This bout and event was tentatively scheduled to take place 5 1/2 weeks ago on Wednesday, September 2nd in Youngstown, Ohio, but Henderson suffered an injury which required the fight to be rescheduled for October 10th. The change of dates also included a change of venue and location, but the card remained intact for the most part.
The winner of Cerrone vs. Henderson will earn WEC interim lightweight champion status and is slated to fight the WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner in a title unification bout, when and if he is medically cleared. Varner has not fought since being injured in his title defense against Cerrone last January. Meanwhile, Cerrone is coming off a quick submission win over the previously unbeaten James Krause in June and Henderson is coming off a very impressive win over Shane Roller at WEC 40 in April.
Also in lightweight action, UFC and WEC veteran Richard "Cleat" Crunkilton of The Armory in Daytona Beach, Florida will take on WEC newcomer Dave Jansen of Team Quest in Portland, Oregon. Crunkilton is 8-1 in the WEC with his only loss coming via TKO in a title fight against former champion "Razor" Rob McCullough. His opponent will be the undefeated and very talented submission wrestler Dave Jansen, who is a veteran of both Sport Fight and M-1 Challenge.
The main card will aslo feature a featherweight bout between Raphael Assuncao and Yves Jabouin. Assuncao is a black belt in jiu-jitsu and is Top 10 ranked featherweight in most MMA polls. The Brazilian fighter Assuncao will bring his 13-1 record into the cage against the Canadian fighter Jabouin who is 14-4. Jabouin is noted for being a very skilled striker and will be making his promotional debut for the WEC.
The final bout on the main card that is guaranteed to be televised on Versus is in the bantamweight division. The New Mexico native Damacio Page, who made a name for himself on the first season of the TapouT show on Versus will take on the Texas native Will Campuzano. Page is 2-1 in the WEC with his only loss coming via submission to the current WEC bantamweight champion Brian Bowles.
