    Hey guys!!

Back in November I was given the honor of fighting in the Black Belt Grand Prix at Renzo Gracie’s World Jiu-Jitsu Expo. I had five matches and ended up making it all the way to the semi-finals, making for probably the best performance of my first year at black belt. I had two submissions, one win on points, one loss to Jackson Sousa by 3-3 on points and 2-1 on advantages and then unfortunately I lost the semi-final to a really tough and humble competitor in James Puopolo by 4-0. Above is the video of my fourth fight from the event which was against Marcel Goncalvez (be sure to switch the quality to at least 480p in the youtube window) Osssssssssssss

    The Tao of Dean Lister

    Fri, 2014-02-07 22:32 — Benjamin Bieker

Dean Lister is an amazing grappler who defies the expectations of the common Jiu Jitsu norm. Where most athletes treat their body as a temple, Lister is apt to drink his way up to a competition similar to Babe Ruth in his prime. This was covered in Michael Hresko’s article “The Tao of Dean Lister” for the Fightland blog.

One of the things about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is being little isn’t easy. Yes the system is designed around a weaker opponent beating a stronger, but there’s times it’s hard to see that, such as being trapped in the bottom of side control. Personally I struggled with this when I was first diving into BJJ and I would like to share with you my secrets to escaping bottom side control against a bigger and stronger opponent

When it comes to the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I wouldn’t say that I’m a “purist” who believes everything should be done the traditional way.  I’m more than aware of the culture in which our sport is founded upon, yet there is a constant changing of the tides.

How To Work Your Way Out Of Side Control Into A Dominant Position

Side control can be one of the most beneficial positions in all of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu if you know how to properly execute from here.  Often times I see grapplers stall out and are unable to work from this position, unsure of what their next move should be.
