The OTM Crew checked into Cleber Jiu Jitsu to see what all the hype is about.
The place has certainly grown since he first opened up, and the equipment and mat space is huge! This school has always had a solid reputation for winning tournaments and teaching solid jiu jitsu with emphasis on perfecting the basics. After sitting through the kids class, I was very impressed at how well the kids flowed and chained moves during the sparring. They all rolled better than most adults I have seen, which is a scary thought once they grow up. The kids all seemed very happy to be there and the whole gym was filled with a warm inviting environment. As well as cleber, there were 4 other black belts on the mat which is great to see.
After talking to Cleber and getting things set up, we put on our gi’s and jumped into the adult gi class. The warm up was good, we did jiu jitsu specific workouts and some conditioning drills before learning some techniques. When we started rolling, the level of competition was great! Got to roll with Felipe Fogolin, a black belt under Cleber as well as a former Olympian for Judo and a 5 and 1 professional Mixed Martial arts record. This is a great place for jiu jitsu and you can tell that everyone there loves what they are doing. The whole gym keeps a respectful vibe while still staying competitive enough to improve daily.
Right after the Gi class ended, some of the advanced guys started lacing up the gloves for some MMA training. We stepped in and stood toe to toe with some of the guys and had a great time sparring. Cleber Jiu Jitsu is doing some big things, and the team will always be a competitor at tournaments. This is a must see if you are in the city of Huntington Beach looking for a good spot to roll.
