GREENWOOD, IN -- Carlson Gracie Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu, a gym that teaches students self-defense techniques through a unique form of Brazilian groundfighting or grappling, is helping launch a new after school program at Center Grove Middle School.
Instructors from the Indianapolis Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym will help students improve flexibility, coordination and increase muscle development while teaching self-defense movements. The class is a part of the school's new Fitness Club that meets after school. Students will be able to learn about a number of different fitness techniques during the program, which begins on February 27, 2012.
"Middle school can be a tough time for some kids and participating in jiu jitsu can help them improve their self-esteem, self-control, perseverance and integrity. It's also perfect for a fitness class since our students are constantly moving around. We think it's a fun way to exercise and we can't wait to show these students some new moves they can use to stay active," said Alan Stockman, Owner and Instructor of Carlson Gracie Indianapolis Jiu Jitsu (http://www.carlsongracieindy.com).
The moves and techniques used by the Indianapolis Self Defense students are designed to provide a way for smaller, weaker individuals to protect themselves from attackers, even if the attacker is bigger, stronger and more athletic. The gym offers a number of different classes for students starting as young as age four and classes are available Monday through Thursday, with open mat times on Fridays and Saturdays.
Stockman, the owner and primary instructor at the studio, has been studying jiu jitsu for 15 years. He began his training journey in Brazil, where the fighting style originated. Stockman spent nearly four years in Brazil, training and competing before he moved back to the United States. After he arrived back in the U.S., he continued to train and helped two Brazilian jiu jitsu black belts relocate to Indiana.
"I've studied other forms of martial arts, but nothing captured my interest like jiu jitsu. While most people think of grappling and groundfighting as strictly for exercise or self-defense, but the truth is that it requires a great sense of depth, strategy and patience. I've found that since starting, my memory and concentration are both improved and I think people of all ages and fitness levels can benefit from exploring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you're interested in checking out our program with a free seven day pass, we invite you to give us a call or stop by to find out more," said Stockman.
