Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rafael Lovato Jr. is hungry and he’s on a mission to set a new World record in Jiu-Jitsu. The Lucky Gi and OTM Fight Shop sponsored fighter wants to become the first American to win two black belt divisional titles at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships. BJ Penn was the first American to win one title and Lovato Jr. is now the second.
In the black belt preliminaries on Saturday, Lovato Jr. submitted his first two opponents from mount to secure a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinals. The Lucky Gi sponsored fighter is now 2 fights away from securing the gold at medium heavy weight.
In Sunday’s quarterfinals, Lovato Jr. edged Dimitrius Soares with a referee decision. The two exchanged sweeps and were tied 2-2 with an advantage each. All three referees voted in favor of Lovato Jr. for the win.
