Many Mourn the Passing of Mauricio Zingano

    Wed, 2014-01-15 12:11 — Benjamin Bieker

Third degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Mauricio Zingano passed away Monday leaving behind a wife and son. Zingano was of course husband to current UFC female bantamweight number one contender Cat Zingano who earned her title shot with a win over Miesha Tate. She was supposed to coach opposite of UFC champion Ronda Rousey on The Ultimate Fighter, but an ACL injury took her out of that slot and the title shot.

Mauricio Zingano owned and operated Zingano BJJ which held two gyms in the Colorado in correlation with Black House MMA. He earned his black belt from Carlos Elias. The reason for his death is not being released, but the corner will release the cause shortly when the report comes out. It was reported as suicide and no means of fowl play were found, but nothing is for certain until the ME’s report is released. Many people were worried about the state of his wife and child, but she released this statement later in the day Tuesday.

“Late yesterday evening, I learned that my husband and soul mate of seven years, Mauricio Zingano, has passed away.

My life has changed irrevocably. I am shocked and deeply saddened. Thankfully, my family and friends are coming together to provide the support I need. I am grateful for them, as I know there are many difficult days ahead.

I also very much appreciate the outpour of support from the jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts world. My husband was well known and respected in this close-knit community and I know he would appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers, as do I.

At this time, I respectfully ask everyone to give me privacy as I gather with relatives and friends. Again, I give thanks to all for the kind words and support.

    Sincerely,

    Cat Zingano”
