Marez, Duarte Victorious in Primal MMA Debut

[8/12/2007] Tijuana, Mexico, August 11 – Primal Mixed
Martial Arts’ inaugural event, “The Next Level”, went
off with a bang. Nearly 2,000 MMA fans packed the El
Foro Jai Alai Palace to enjoy the promotions first
    ever show.

In the main event, Chris “Monster” Marez (5-1) stopped
Vince Lucero (18-13) by TKO (kicks) at 1:36 in the
third round. Marez, 6’2” 280 pounds, and Lucero, 6’2”
285, slugged it out for three rounds of exciting
action, each man landing several solid punches.
However, in the third round the accumulation of Marez’
effective leg kicks rendered Lucero unable to
    continue.

In another featured fight of the evening, Shaw “Quiet
Storm” Bias (11-5) was defeated by Tijuana’s Antonio
Duarte (7-1). Bias controlled the early rounds,
securing several take downs over a patient and
technical Duarte. However, in the later rounds Duarte
was the more effective striker and was successful in
defending against Bias’ takedown attempts. After five
rounds the fight went to the judges who unanimously
scored the fight in favor of the hometown favorite,
    Duarte.

The undercard was highlighted by a thrilling battle
between Edgar “Motor” Osorio (5-1) and Ryan “Bones”
Bixler (13-3). In the very opening seconds of the
bout Bixler landed a devastating right cross that
floored Osorio. It looked as if the fight might end
early, but Osorio regained his composure and held on
to Bixler in his guard. Osorio, the native of Oaxaca,
Mexico, reversed Bixler and took his back for a moment
before Bixler regained the top position again. After
five rounds of intense competition the Judges
unanimously declared Bixler the victor, as he had used
his strong wrestling to control the dominant position
for a majority of the fight.
