Popular U.S. Open preps for new San Jose, California venue

    Thu, 2011-08-25 17:05 — Christie Sullivan

After 15 years of jiu-jitsu near the beaches of Santa Cruz, California, Claudio França's popular U.S. Open Brazilian JiuJitsu tournament will move from the academy's surfer friendly home turf to the nearby “Silicon Valley” city of San Jose for it’s 16th installment.

This Northern California tournament has been the stomping ground for many San Francisco Bay Area black belts and their students, in addition to a slew of international competitors who make the trek for it’s high caliber of competition.

Past U.S. Open competitors include: Ryan Hall, Jeff Glover, Antonio Braga Neto, Marcel ‘Mãozinha’ Fortuna, Philipe Della Monica, Nick Diaz, Rodrigo Freitas, Stephan Goyne, Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes, Nathan Mendelsohn, Nate Diaz, and Mackenzie Dern.

Confirmed competitors for this year’s U.S. Open XVI can be found here.

In addition to the individual competition, points are awarded to all competitors who medal 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Those points are then tallied up to award team trophy winner among the adult, female, kids and masters divisions.

In an email to past competitors and the BJJ community, França noted that the tournament had outgrown the Santa Cruz venue and the city of San Jose will promised a lot to offer in the way of restaurants, hotels, entertainment and traveling convenience.

This year's U.S. Open XVI, will take place on October 15th and 16th, 2011 at the San Jose State University Events Center.

The tournament will be open to all blue belt levels in juvenile through senior III divisions, with no kids divisions. The price for early registration is $75.00.
