Product Review: Ginastica Natural

From the cover design to the filming of the actual demonstrations, this is an interesting and intelligent looking video. While watching it you can almost smell the sunshine.

The outdoors is an important component of professor Romano’s system. There are constant references to animals, in the form of the names of movements, and as participants providing inspiration in the background.

Professor Romano is trying to recapture a more primal form of life where everyone walked, ran, swam, climbed, or slithered to where they wanted to go. Combine this with modern biomechanics, and the synthesis is Ginastica Natural.

Sounds great doesn’t it? Especially when you see him in the presence of big names like Belfort, Gurgel, and others. The problem is he doesn’t speak English, so there isn’t much elaboration on “the system” as such. His website is also in Portuguese.

So, what does it look like? The yoga influence is obvious. You will recognize the sun salutation immediately. Unlike yoga, there are quick, startling moves. From a plank position he suddenly brings his leg out, up, and forward, like a fly cleaning it’s self. Then the rhythm completely changes as he slowly raises his arm to shoulder height like a sprout in time-lapse photography.

After the warm-ups, he clambers up rocks and sand dunes, in either the monkey or tiger gait. Conventional running is combined with periodic drops to the ground for spider walk, then run again, then down for monkey walk, back up to running, etc.
