Rumble on the Rock VI Brings Akebono, Gracie Family, and B.J. Penn to Neal Blaisdell Center November 20th
Event promises to be the largest Mixed Martial Arts event ever held in U.S.
HONOLULU, HAWAII--Let`s get ready to rumble Hawaii! On Saturday, November 20, 2004 the
K-1 Fighting Network and Prodigy Productions will team up to throw the biggest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event ever held in America at the Neal Blaisdell Arena, Rumble on the Rock VI. A total of 11 fights are scheduled with the main event featuring Hawaii`s own #1 world ranked BJ Penn against Rodrigo Gracie, of the Gracie Family in Brazil. The star-studded, Hawaiian-themed event will also feature Japanese Sumo icon Akebono, who will be present to coach his newest fighter and to debut his Team Yokozuna.
To kickoff the event, fighter weigh ins and a press conference are scheduled for Friday, November 19th at the Ala Moana Centerstage at 4p.m., where fans and media will have the unique opportunity to meet the fighters and their trainers. The kickoff event will be free of charge. The November 20th event will be held at the Neal Blaisdell Center, doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $30, $60, $65, $100, $150 and $200 and can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or at any Ticketmaster location.
A feat never before accomplished by any MMA organization in America, Prodigy Productions and K-1 have succeeded in bringing two Gracie family members onto the same fight card for the first time in history outside of Japan. The most recognized family in martial arts history, the Gracie
family name has not been seen on an MMA fightcard in the United States for over 10 years. Royler Gracie, the most decorated Jiu-Jitsu athlete of all time and well-respected Gracie family member, will face off with Olympic wrestler Kazuyuki Miyata of Japan.
BJ Penn of Wainaku, Hilo will move up to the 185 lb. division for the main event after previously dominating the 155 lb. and 170 lb. divisions. Penn is the only non-Brazilian to win the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships as a black belt and currently holds the renowned title of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Champion of the world.
The event will also host the returns of UFC heavyweight veterans Wesley "Cabbage" Correira (13-6) and Wes "The Project" Sims (5-5) as well as undefeated big man Sean O` Hare (17-0). The hard-punching Correira will face Yoshihiro Nakao (1-1) of Japan. A giant at 6`9" and 255 lbs., Sims will take on Holland kickboxing and jiu-jitsu stylist, Antoni Hardonk (9-3). The 6"6", 275 lb. O`Hare will face off with Japan`s Shungo Oyama.
In an effort to incorporate Hawai‘i`s unique sense of place into the evening, the November 20th production will have a focus on Hawaiian culture. Fighters will make their way into the ring from a giant volcano backdrop complete with pyrotechnics and a light show. In coordination with Tihati Productions (www.tihati.com), Hawai`i`s largest entertainment company, the event will showcase some of Hawaii`s finest hula dancers and musicians and the Hawaiian-focus will seek to appeal to a global pay-per-view audience.
According to Jay Dee Penn, C.E.O. of Prodigy Productions, "The long anticipated return of the Gracie family to America, Hawaii`s champion BJ Penn, the debut of Akebono`s fight team, a pay per view broadcast in Japan and America, and a completely unrivaled production is going to place Hawaii in a global spotlight on November 20th. Rumble on the Rock VI will go down in
history as the biggest MMA event ever held on U.S. soil," he said.
The K-1 Fighting Network is the largest martial arts production in the world and hosts 30 events a year worldwide. They are based out of Tokyo, Japan. Prodigy Productions is a Hawaii-based company and produces Rumble on the Rock, Proving Grounds, and RumbleVision. This will be the first time the two organizations have cross promoted.
