Strikeforce – Diaz vs. Cyborg (Review)

It was a sold out crowd in San Jose for this double title MMA event. Available on SHOWTIME, it was an incredible night of action packed matches.  Optimistic Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was very happy with the second show of 2011 and promises many more exciting events.

NICK DIAZ (23-7-1) VS EVANGELISTA “CYBORG” SANTOS (18-13)

In Round One, Cyborg begins to punish Diaz with devastating leg kicks. He lands several good shots but pays the price by being on the receiving end of Nick’s punches as they trade blows. Diaz displays his usual bad boy attitude and taunts Cyborg as he invites him to come in closer. At times, Cyborg is landing strikes and “man-handling” Diaz around the octagon. There was a great exchange between the two fighters, and Cyborg seems slightly gassed at the end of the first round.

The action continues in Round Two with Diaz punching and Cyborg landing whip like cut kicks, causing Nick to switch lead legs. Cyborg looks weary and as the crowd begins to chant loudly “Diaz, Diaz, Diaz”, Nick continues his charge. At that point, Evangelista takes the fight to the mat and finds himself in Nick’s guard. In a fight that sometimes bordered between a Pro match and a schoolyard rumble,  Diaz hooks an armbar and wins the match.

Winner: Nick Diaz by Armbar at 4:50 of Round Two.

RONALDO “JACARE” SOUZA (13-2-1) VS RUTHLESS ROBBIE LAWLER (20-6-1)

In Round One, defending Champion, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza throws the first kick of the bout which misses Lawler totally. Lawler quickly attacks but is pushed to the cage by Jacare. Souza gets the take down but Robbie breaks away, stands up and throws vicious knees and punches, knocking Jacare to the mat, where he quickly goes into guard. Jacare is hurt from the flurry of strikes, but is able to regain composure while on the ground.

In Round Two, Souza gets Lawler to the mat right away, but can’t do much damage as Robbie protects himself well. Jacare eventually gets Lawler in an armbar. Robbie escapes but shortly after gets caught from behind in a Rear Naked Choke.

Winner : Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza by Rear Naked Choke at 2:00 of Round Two.

HERSCHEL WALKER (1-0) VS SCOTT CARSON (4-1)

The first blow of the match is a kick to Walker’s face. Herschel just shakes it off and smiles at Carson. Walker lands a strong left hook, knocking Scott to the mat. Herschel pounces on Carson, maintaining control and getting his back. Carson turtles on the bottom while Walker delivers hard knee shots to his ribs and punches from the side to his head. One punch catapulted Carson’s mouthpiece across the cage. Walker continues to punish Carson as Ref stops match due to undefended strikes.

Winner: Herschel Walker by TKO at 3:13 of Round one.

ROGER GRACIE (3-0) VS TREVOR PRANGLEY (23-6-1)

Both fighters came out cautiously in the first round, feeling each other out from a distance. Roger was throwing light kicks and fakes as the crowd began to boo at the lack of action. Gracie charged in, taking Prangley to the cage and gets the take down. Roger holds Trevor against the post of the cage. Prangely attempts to escape but gets caught as Roger gains full mount. Once again Prangley attempts to escape and this time Gracie gets his back. Trevor gets caught in a rear naked choke.

Winner: Roger Gracie by Rear Naked Choke at 4:19 round one.
