Drug Testing at the Pan Ams: How will it work?

    Wed, 2013-01-23 14:16 — Benjamin Bieker

While drug testing has not been done in most BJJ tournaments, it looks like the IBJJF is trying to level the playing field for their first big tournament of the year. That is because at the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships, planned to be held from March 20-24, the IBJJF is going to have an anti-doping testing program implemented. The testing is going to be done by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

First, lets start off with a bit of a disclaimer in that this is an opinion based review, and that anything professed or stated in this article is my thoughts alone. In no way is this a general consensus or everyone’s belief. Just my own. With that out of the way lets get into it and take a look at Gracie Nationals 2013 the Gi portion which took place on January 19th.

A BJJ Tournament From A White Belt Perspective #2

    Tue, 2012-08-21 19:15 — Benjamin Bieker

This last weekend, I competed at the North American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(NABJJ) 8th annual Gi tournament in Carson, Ca at Cal State Dominguez Hills. I know this facility since I had competed at the Samurai JJ event the week before. I have to admit through this whole process the event was probably ran the best out of any I have went to, and the divisions actually started on time, if not earlier than anticipated. That did not stop, however, the ability for many things to fall apart for my day.

    Samurai JJ Pro Event recap

The Samurai Pro JJ event took place this last Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Ca. The event had nearly 200 competitors from various school, belt levels, and tournament experience. They ran a six mat set-up, and had only one division going at a time in terms of belt level. There was prize money to be won, but it was in the absolute division. To compete in the absolute you had to win your own division by weight, belt, and age. The even took nearly all day, but there was great matches, great finishes, and a mixture of emotions.

A BJJ Tournament From A White Belt Perspective #1

    Sun, 2012-08-12 23:00 — Benjamin Bieker

This is a new blog/journal to where I, Ben Bieker, am going to chronicle my competitions from the perspective of a white belt. This weekend, I competed in the Samurai Pro JJ event that took place at Cal State Dominguez Hills. It was my third event in my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu career after competing two times earlier this year. I hope to compete two or three more times this year, and you gawkers and fans of On The Mat can follow along with me on my journey.
