Gumby's Column: Holding Ourselves to a Higher Standard

    Fri, 2013-01-18 15:05 — Gumby

I had posted this on my Facebook page a few days ago, bait more off the cuff from my usual style, with the intent of expanding on this later.  But I am reposting this here on OTM word for word.

"Give a horrific and tragic turn of events in our community of Jiu Jitsu, I've had a number of conversations and have been asked to share my thoughts with quite a few people. I am shook by what happened as well, and I'm measuring my response now to be thoughtful and responsible.

    Gumby's Monday Column

    Sun, 2012-10-14 22:50 — Gumby

I’ve promised more than a few friends plus myself that I was going to get back to writing again on the regular.  The last couple of weeks in particular have lit a fire under my butt.  So I’m aiming for a weekly column?  Keep stroking my ego and I might actually stick to it this time.

Can S7 change the landscape of Submission Grappling?

    Tue, 2012-08-21 14:22 — Gumby

I met S7 founders Dayan Henderson and Paul Paterson at the Jiu Jitsu Expo in Long Beach a few months ago.  The on the spot presentation they gave me was very polished, very ambitious, but in 16 years it wasn’t necessarily promises that I haven’t heard before.   Dayan and Paul admittedly didn’t have too much of a background in the martial arts and they seemed very nice but I’d believe it when I saw it.

    Gumby’s Blog: Rafael Lovato Jr

    Tue, 2011-09-06 08:26 — Gumby

I’ve known Rafael Lovato Jr for a long time now.   We’ve followed his career from his very early stages, sponsored him and became friends.  His career has been quite remarkable, with dozens of important titles but his two most important accomplishments thus far has been his BJJ World Championship title at Black Belt (only the second American behind BJ Penn to accomplish this feat), and his ability to produce a IBJJF world Champion from start to finish in Justin Rader (both teacher and student took the podium at the No Gi Worlds in the Black Belt Adult division).&n
