    Gumby’s Blog: Rafael Lovato Jr

    Tue, 2011-09-06 09:26 — Gumby

I’ve known Rafael Lovato Jr for a long time now.   We’ve followed his career from his very early stages, sponsored him and became friends.  His career has been quite remarkable, with dozens of important titles but his two most important accomplishments thus far has been his BJJ World Championship title at Black Belt (only the second American behind BJ Penn to accomplish this feat), and his ability to produce a IBJJF world Champion from start to finish in Justin Rader (both teacher and student took the podium at the No Gi Worlds in the Black Belt Adult division).&n

    RIP Luis "Sucuri" Tongo

    Thu, 2011-02-17 09:51 — Gumby

We're sorry to report that Luis "Sucuri" Tongo has passed away on February 16, 2011 following a car accident in the Carolinas.

Sucuri was one of the early contributers to OntheMat, and often shared technique pictorials and tutorials.  I had the opportunity to meet him when travelling out to the Bud Cups and found him to be as personable as he was knowledgeable.

Sucuri will be be missed by his family and friends and his academy, but also by the whole Jiu Jitsu community.

More info can be found on his academy website:

Hi, I’m Alan Marques, but my friends call me Gumby, and you might remember me from such websites as this one.

Actually, despite my lower profile lately, I’m one of the founders of OTM.

    My E-mail Blew Up

    Wed, 2010-09-15 08:18 — Gumby

Just a quick note, if you've been trying to get ahold of me through my OntheMat e-mail address, I blew my client up (and my computer to an extent) a few days ago and I've been trying to fix things here.  So I haven't been ignoring you!

With all the great new contributers to OTM, I have some things in the works myself.

Critical Thinking in Jiu Jitsu: A word on CONTROL

    Mon, 2010-05-03 09:38 — Gumby

It should be no surprise to you that I love Jiu Jitsu.

I think it's the greatest art in the world and ultimately the most challenging.

Why is it the most challenging?  To my students I often summarize a Jiu Jitsu mindset in three words (those words being: SAFETY, POSITION, and FINISH), but if I wanted to I can summarize Jiu Jitsu in just one word:  CONTROL.
