Chael Sonnen's colorful life of big-time collegiate wrestling and ultimate fighting detoured on Monday into a darker realm.

The 33-year-old Portlander pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to a single count of money laundering. The charges stemmed from a 2006 home sale in which Sonnen and others involved in the deal steered a $69,091 kickback to the buyer.

The government is recommending Sonnen be sentenced to two years of probation.

 The police in Rio de Janeiro entered a heavily fortified shantytown on Thursday in an effort to arrest drug gang leaders they blamed for five days of widespread violence. Officers made it into the shantytown, Vila Cruzeiro, despite efforts by the gangs to stop them by burning vehicles in their path. Live television images showed dozens of heavily armed youths setting up positions and preparing to battle the police, who are being supported by Brazilian marines in six armored personnel carriers.

 USA Wrestling has received seven proposal packets from bid cities and their potential local organizing committees to jointly host the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling and Weightlifting.
