The Samurai Pro JJ event took place this last Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Ca. The event had nearly 200 competitors from various school, belt levels, and tournament experience. They ran a six mat set-up, and had only one division going at a time in terms of belt level. There was prize money to be won, but it was in the absolute division. To compete in the absolute you had to win your own division by weight, belt, and age. The even took nearly all day, but there was great matches, great finishes, and a mixture of emotions.

Reflecting On My Mentor: The Late Great Oswaldo Paquetá

I first met Paquetá on my first adventure to Brazil to train Jiu Jitsu back in 1999. I already knew who he was, because my instructor Kurt Osiander had lent me tapes of his to study of the old Mundials and Brasileiros. The tapes were black-and-white with some patches of green in between the fuzz. This was long before DVD's and these tapes were often 10th generation copies, but they were the best thing in the world to watch. We all watched them at Ralph Gracie's like they were the gospel for us.

Hey guys!!

This is Nathan Mendelsohn back with the first edition of what will be my weekly "Technique of the Week" series right here on my blog!! This week's techique is one that I use all the time in competition, most notably in my final as a purple belt lightweight at the IBJJF US Nationals 2009 against Ronis Gracie. Check it out, hope it works for you like it has for me!! (Sorry for the background noise!)

Jiu Jitsu Tournament for all levels Kids and Adults.

Trophies will be awarded to the three best placed schools on the adult division and on Kids division.

Every kid that did not medal, will get a participation medal.

$6,000 on Cash Prizes for the Man absolute division and Women Open Class

Here is the breakdown;

-Adult Man Absolute ; White Belt ( $250) , Blue Belt ( $500) , Purple Belt ($750) , Brown Belt ( $1,000) and Black Belt ( $2,000)

Before Youtube and Facebook, even before OnTheMat, there was Oswaldo Paquetá. If you're not familiar with the Red Belt Grandmaster, chances are you are at least familiar with his work, as much if not all of the early footage of Jiu Jitsu from Brazil was shot and archived by the man and his video camera.
