Have you been watching the BJ Penn Show?

May 31st, 2007 by Gumby

I mean the other, useful BJ Penn show over at his website www.BJPenn.com

Completely free webisodes of the daily trainings and goings-on at his gym in Hilo. Seriously, EVERYONE who is a fan of BJ, BJJ, or MMA should be checking this out everyday.

At any rate, by checking out the recent episodes you have the opportunity to watch one of the greatest unknown talents around in action. I’m talking about BJ’s younger brother Reagan Penn.

On the episode for 5/18, for example you get to see Reagan roll through two of the students at the academy and make it look ridiculously easy.

As a matter of fact, I’ve never seen anyone pick up Jiu Jitsu more naturally than Reagan did. And I mean anyone. In 1998 when BJ took his first Mundial medal ( a silver at blue belt, Pena class), Reagan took FIRST at the blue belt Leve. At that point Reagan was a white belt with less than two months on and off training. He had gone to Brazil to support BJ and decided to enter just for fun and winds up winning his division.

Jealous yet? Funny thing is that Reagan’s first love isn’t even jiu jitsu. As their mother once explained to me, BJ loves Jiu Jitsu, JD is the businessman, and Reagan loves computers (he does most of the website work on BJPenn.com by the way). I often joked that it’s too bad one of them wasn’t into medicine, because I’m convinced they would find a cure for death.

You can see all of the brothers on the BJPenn.com show, you can se what makes them so damn tough and pick up some tips of your own. Lots of footage of them in training worth checking out. IF you search the archives, there’s even video of matches of them against each other which trust me, is some of the most unbelievable footage you can watch on the net.

May 28th, 2007 by Gumby

This from http://www.tatame.com.br/2007/05/27/Big-Mac-leva-peso-e-absoluto-no-Brasileiro-de-Jiu-Jitsu

Ruff Translation

Rafael Lovato is the first gringo (non-Brazilian) Black Belt Champion of the Brasileiro.

The 2007 Brasileiro will be remembered for the first foriegn (non-brazilian) black belt champion.  Rafael Lovato, student of Saulo Ribeiro, who came to Brazil exclusively for the competition, was the best of the super heavyweight division.  In the final Rafael beat Roberto Abreu(Nova Geracao, who had beat Rodrigo Comprido 8 to 0 in the semifinal.  With an excellent guard, the gringo (foriegner) swept Roberto two times and won with a score of 4X0 to win the highest place on the podium.

Unofficial REsults from Around the World

May 13th, 2007 by Gumby

Dave Camarillo defeats his opponent in Japan (BJJ Match) by armlock after a sweep.  Apparently Dave’s opponent got mad at him and kicked him in the face.  Waiting for more details on that.

Rafael Lovato Jr. defeats Josh Griffiths by leg lock in the Cayman Islands.  Not a bad location!
