Know Your History On the Mat! - The Belt Database Version 3.0

During the first wave of Vale Tudo fighting that came to the USA, it was hard to know who was legitimate and who wasn't. There we all kinds of claims people were making. It was hard to tell the real from the fake. The first web site to try and validate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts was BJJ.org.  The site had no authority to rank anyone. Belt listings were submitted by other enthusiasts & players. Through research and online policing the belts were verified. Mostly on respect and credibility of the black belt, the community mostly based it through competition and verifiable sources.   

Soon it became a test of your credibility on the mat. If your belt was recognized, you were legit. The entire Gracie family geneology was drawn out, scrutinized then verified as accurate as the family tree. The first BJJ site on the internet, BJJ.org became know & recognized world wide as the reference guide. As you can imagine this soon became a lot of work. 

The torch was later passed from BJJ.org to OntheMat.com. As BJJ grew requests for belt registration got overwhelming.  For the last four years OntheMat has hosted the belt database & Gracie family genealogy.  But, our technology could not keep pace with the sports growth.  We couldn't list everyone's belt rank and keep it updated properly. 

As the sport of BJJ has grown world wide so have the demands on The OTM Belt Database. To meet those needs, we have created a community to continue the unlimited growth of the belt database and continue the self policing our community is know for.

1) Join up Create your profile here.  (If you were already listed in our belt database, bought something off our site, or fought in an event we sponsored, you may already have an account set up for you. Just request you new password here.)

2) Then click on your profile tab to list your belt rank, join your school group, add your own pics or videos, or link to videos already in our video database (over 2000 videos and growing).

3) Then invite your training partners, team mates, and instructors to join the community. 

Our goal is to provide the sport with a way to grow globally and the world to track the rankings of all its players.  We have compiled the largest list of  Red, Black, and Brown Belts in the world. You can now trace your History in the art all the way back to Japan, and then some. Each click through the belt database take you deeper in to your roots.  

We have built the foundation and add some rooms but it is really up to you to fill in your BJJ History here.
