ADCC North American Trials Thoughts: 65K and Under

    Wed, 2006-09-20 08:43 — Gumby

    65 kgs and under:
*Confirmed: Jeff Glover (16-Time GQ Champ)
    *Confirmed: Darren Uyenoyama (Ralph Gracie)
*Confirmed: Dave Jacobs (Yamasaki Jiu Jitsu)
    *Confirmed: Mike Mrkulic (Royler Gracie)
*Confirmed: Sim Go (8-Time Grapplers Quest Champ)

    My Thoughts:

On paper Glover should win this division hands down, he's among the hottest grapplers in the game right now. After winning his alternate match at ADCC 2005 i would have assumed he would get an invite into the big dance already, but whatever, he competes all the time anyway.

It will be interesting to see Darren Uyenoyama at this level of competition. We've been training partners at Ralph Gracie's for years, and if he hadn't taken a VERY long lay off I'm convinced he would be among the top US grapplers at this weight right now. Even with the long lay off he's been very impressive in his return.

Mike Mrkulic has actually fought in ADCC before, this combined with his footlocking game makes him the most dangerous in some ways, but his conditioning is usually suspect. We'll see how badly he wants back in.

Dave Jacobs and Sim Go are both talented grapplers, but are longshots in my opinion.

Chances on defeating the reigning ADCC champion:

Leozinho seems to be in a class by himself right now in this division. He won last year on a badly broken foot, and right now he's healthy. The only two people i can see detroning him this year (and that is if he makes a serious mistake) are Rany Yahra or Javi Vazquez, both of whom should get direct invites in.

Who else should also be in the trials:

Ricky Lundell just defeated Jeff Glover, and I have been hugely impressed by what little I have seen of him so far. He would make an extremely dangerous addition to this group.

Shane Rice from Rickson Gracie has expressed interest in joing the trials as well.

I've talked to Clay Guida about applying for the trials, while he has limited submission grappling experience he's a heck of a MMA fighter and would be the best wrestler in this field. He reminds me a lot of a raw Kurt Pellegrino.
