Pro Wrestling Moves in BJJ/MMA
Fri, 2006-10-20 11:01 — Gumby
So after watching the Ultimate Fighter last night, my TIVO got a few minutes of TNA Wrestling. I usually fast forward or delete right away, but about a minute in Jake "the Snake" Roberts comes staggering (and I do mean staggering) down the ramp and I got all nostalgic for the good ol' days. As a kid I loved pro wrestling (heck I watched pretty intensely up until a few years ago actually).
At any rate, Jake's famous for a few things; carrying a snake to the ring, his masterful interviews and psychology, smoking crack for the camera in the movie "Beyond the mat" and his signature move the DDT. Nothing fancy about the DDT, just basically a front side headlock and you drop your opponent on his face.
Got me thinking as to why we didn't see the DDT in MMA matches. It could theoretically work. Some other pro wrestling moves could work also. Some, not all. I've seen people try the figure four leglock in class and it's always a bad idea. But I bet a clothesline would work in an MMA match. The sharpshooter looks painful as hell, I just don't see anyone actually putting that on a concious opponent. The sleeper hold is basically a RNC. And so on....
Any others?
