Cauliflower Ears question
Thu, 2006-11-02 15:08 — j281
I've done some searches in the forum but can only find a few topics about this. I recently started BJJ and would really like to avoid cauli ears. I train 2-3 times a week for about an hour at a time and I don't have plans on going really competitive with it. Other than resorting to ear guards, is there anyway to avoid them? Also, will I even get them seeing how I don't train as much as other people who have them?
Thanks.

I see, thanks for that bit of info. Is cauli ear caused more by slamming the ear against something or by the rubbing of it? Also, what ear guards would you recommend. I know some wrestlers who use Cliff Keen F3's. How much will ear guards impair my game?
i got lazy about wearing ear guards a while ago. i used to always wear them but i just misplaced mine and haven't bothered to get another set.
i'm actually surprised it cauliflower ear hasn't been an issue for me as mine are big enough you'd think they'd get in the way pretty often!
WHen i first started bjj back in dec 05, i was only training one day a week and my ears would swell up and stay up for a few days, by the next class they would better and do it all over again, i broke my nose and took a while off and then started back and i have been going same amount of time and just as strong and they dont even bother me at all now.
I see, so you have no cauli at all? How long were each of your training sessions..mine are about an hour each.
There must be something about getting it. I have rolled for 9 years and have no cauliflowered ears. I have seen people roll for 6 months and get it. I do not know why this is.
Honestly i think it just depends on the person and genetics, my friend took judo for 2-3 months and then quit and his ears are still cauliflowered, and he hasnt done anything grappling in like 6 months.
