Great article!
Hi there guys
Carl Fisher from the UK signing in and have to say a really good article and well looking forward to future instalments; very interested into what the future articles will be containing, already the first article throws up some good points about mentoring.
Well done Gumby!
Had the honour of finally meeting Papa John in the UK the other week, when Carlinhos was in town giving a couple of seminars after the Europeans. Nice guy!
Fp

mono
hello,
good articles, all!!!!
thanks.
I'm on board for the ride as well. Great article and lookin forward to more of em.
hello,
echo that!! when will they begin appearing?
thanks.
Ok Gumby I have a question for you. What happens when you get a mentor then he does not train as hard as you do so you passs him up in skill. Or even if you learn what you can from him and are no longer progressing. How do you go about getting a newe mentor without any hard feelings?
I agree that in most sports the instructor (Coach) is not better then the players. In JJ I find this to be a little different. We generally train with people who are better then us. I agree that the mentor should step aside if he is no longer able to bring the fighter to the next level. I am sure that the fighter will always remeber the mentor who helped him get started and the program sounds like a good one to me.
hello,
shooting blind here, but it seems like a wise idea to stay open to good ideas no matter the source.
this skull would feel foolish if a good mentor or coach was passed up because of "unnecessarily narrow" criteria.
got lucky with this group. they made it clear they all have a vested interest in the outcome of each others capabilities. and at least 2 mentors are mentoring thier own former mentors. the "old" mentors still seems to offer ideas as well.
guess a real mentor never really gives up on thier "protoge's".
is this even close to correct? or was the point spectacularly missed?
thanks.
hello,
kill them.
hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
it seems reasonable that anyone you are training with will realize at some point that "you are better". it would then come as no surprise that you find another mentor.
for example, in this current group, there are many skill levels (most rally good). and there seems to be a chain of mentorship going on (asked about this after reading the article). it seems that several who are mentoring were at some point mentored by the very ones they are mentoring now. generally (if it was understood correctly) if you are progressing in such a manner, a new mentor sort of finds you. it is said that if this does not occur, you need to find a new crew.
hope this helps. mind you, this observation is based on several WEEKS of experience..... there may be a lot missing here.
thanks.
Good article. I really never thought of mentoring someone. I look froward to your other articles.
Very cool. Just finished reading the first one. I'm looking forward to this series.
very cool idea Gumby. blows my mind. u jsut said u are not our mentors but I think you just became our E-mentor. you are definitly my E-mentor. and in lesson one you are mentored me to get a mentor.
E-mentorship is a good thing for everyone involved, but I think it also helps keep long distant students in touch as well. People like myself don't have an instructor that we can work with everyday. So an e-mentorship is important too us.
I guess in a sense for those of us who run a club without a brown or black belt instructor are mentors for those who train with us. Groups like mine can become very tight knit and we become mentors for each other as well. We help each other grow in the sport every day we train.
Your article definitely makes a person think. Great discussion Gumby!
hello,
echo that!!!! go gumby!!!
thanks
I hope your forum does better then mine. you have a better subject and I guess no one likes to talk to cops.
hello,
LSD will be there gumby!!!!!!
thanks
The articles get a lot more specific as they go on, I promise that.
agree... nice concept. i suppose the cerebral portion of jiu-jitsu is what is lacking the most... so i can't wait until the next!
