Hello

    Mon, 2007-02-19 18:26 — Sly

new to your board thought I'd introduce myself.
Call me Sly cause thats the nickname I got from gracie barra birmingham when I had the misfortune of informing a purple belt there that I thought armwrestling would be good training for armbar defence.
that was about a year ago and I'm still getting shit from the guys.
(the purple belt in question armbarred dorian yates and didn't think any amount of armwrestling would help defend armbar attacks, I dissagree.)
as I mentioned I train at gracie barra birmingham uk

Braulio estima is the instructor, and it's supposedly one of the top clubs in the uk.

hows about a lil roll call?:D

    hello,

agreed. really don't. not yet. have been told that in about 8 years, will realize there is a really really long way to go!!!!

it is inspiring to see guys in thier 40's and 50's going strong. it makes one think "HA! it can be done!!!"

    oh yeah...

    thanks.

How is it going Sly. He what is it with guys in their 40's still rolling and showing it can be done. Heck I roll all of the time but those 20 year olds are killing me.

    hello,

ah well kibuninc, that is what 20 somethings do. they kill people. hahahahahahaha!!!!

its just inspiring to see those that can, still do after so many years. renzogracie, kenshamrock and those like them really love what they do. after so many years, they still love it.

AND!!!! the best of them love it just as they did as white belts!! some still have that "wow, this is cool!!!!!" attitude about them.

have met some high level instructors with years of experience who are just as full of enthusiasm as the newbies.

looking foreward to 50 years of enthusiasm and "wow, this is cool!!!!!"

    thanks.

careful underdog. you gotta be 18 to be the queen of OTM.

welcome sly. I like the video of braulio pulling guard with one hand on the lapel then he plants to other and sort of hovers then shoots his legs at the guy. I forget the guy and I think Braulio shot right into a triangle but i dont remember for sure. good clip if you can find it.

jjust found this on the gracie barra.co.uk site

Papa John interview in MAI magazine Written by Steve Fan Read Papa John's first ever UK interview in this month's Martial Arts Illustrated. Papa John is a senior official of Gracie Barra, and is an ambassador for Carlos Gracie Jr. The interview is by Steve Fan, who trained with him when Papa John stayed with Braulio Estima last Autumn.
Papa John is a received his black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr at the age of 58, now still only at 59 young , he holds several world titles.
    Read this inspiring story.

so he's actualy older than i thought

    lucifer_z28's picture

barra is a part of rio
Graciebarra is Carlos Gracie Jr.'s team
alot of places give stripes you know the lil black patch on white belts or red on black belts it signifies your progress through the belt 4 stripes then instead of getting a 5 you get your next belt hope i explained it well enough

    Sly's picture

    thanks luci,
where I train we don't have stripes, and when we do eventualy go up a belt we get whipped! by everyone in the club, they take off thier belts and whip you accross the back. and if you don't whip someone hard enough braulio will whip you, and make you do it again!
is this common practice in bjj or am I just lucky?

    Your rating: None
    lorenzodamarith's picture

    hello,

thanks to luciferz28 for the info. did not know that. so, barra is to rio what bronx is to new york? or is it a smaller area like a park or beach? just curious at this point. had seen some stripes before, just did not know what each signifies. is there a unifying criteria, or is it specific to each instructor?

hey sly. braulioestima seems adamant about those whippings!!!! hahahaha!!! certain movies come to mind!!! hahahaha!!! somewhere on this forum is a vid clip of someone getting promoted in this fashion. while some might view it as excessive, it is just a motivational tool (kinda like "bloodwings" in the military).

it likely makes one appreciate the drinking that happens afterward, right?!

    hahahahahaha!!!

and you are luck that way....

    thanks

    lucifer_z28's picture

    - the belt thing is very normal but never made to whip hard
-and yes barra would be like the bronx or whatever but not sure how big it is

Barra isn't like the Bronx. It's actually one of the nicest neighborhoods in Rio.

    hello,

oops. did not intend to "rate" barra. just asking about it relationship to the city of rio.

is it a nieghborhood or something like a burrough (which would include a lot of neighborhoods). idle curiousity at work here.

is it near copacobana beach? asking because all the pictures of the bjj guys from the 60's and 70's show them hanging out at that beach.

    thanks.

At Yamasaki we get wipped, and hit with a stick....or at least we used to. Its a secret practice now. Oh and its on the back, ass, or shoulders.....for like 5 min. All the blackbelts apresant have a go at you. Then you have to run the guantlet.....whole nother story.

    not shure

dorian yates is well into his mma now and he had his temple gym in bermingham probrably not to far from stevie b's. I don't know how it started or where but it was one of the purple belts in our club, Kevin Web.
I asked him what happened and he said he put it on dorian and he didn't even know what was going on till it was to late. I guess he just had no idea.
kivin is cocky and one of those guys that when you roll with you know about it! and are reminded about in the morning.
I love watching braulio paste him.:)
