This is gonna be hard to watch... Penn (my hero) vs. Stevenson (my homie) at UFC 80!

    Sun, 2007-11-04 02:04 — Bevois

Joe Daddy confirmed yesterday that he is set to face Baby Jay in January at UFC 80 in Newcastle, England for the interim UFC lightweight title. Joe said the bout was originally talked about as a part of UFC 79 on December 29th in Las Vegas (where he lives and trains), but now the fight has been moved to main event status for the U.K. show.

The winner will take home the interim UFC lightweight title, while current lightweight champion Sean Sherk awaits his final verdict from the California State Athletic Commission, after his positive steroid test stemming from his July 7th title defense against Hermes Franca at UFC 73. Sherk's suspension is currently set to run for one year, which would keep him out of action until July 2008, but the appeal (postponed until November 13th) could result in a reduction or elimination of the suspension depending on the outcome of the hearing.

Penn and Stevenson have long been considered the top contenders for the lightweight title and the bout will be five rounds, just as any regular championship bout. Penn and Stevenson have the utmost respect for each other on both a personal and professional level, as both share the common link of Marc Laimon. Penn is a longtime friend and training partner of Laimon's through Nova União, while Stevenson is one of Laimon's top students.

Joe could win. I think if he takes it all the way maybe he can win a dec.

But i dont see him subbing or KOing BJ Penn.

Sometimes I think BJ is trying to decide which way he wants to finish the fight; KO, TKO, or submission, he can do it all.

    hello,

have been told something to that effect. also, that he used to go home at night, go to sleep, dream of a new submission variation and then come to class and implement it the following day.

this suggests he is indeed an imaginitive fighter.....

so many idea, so little time.

    thanks

I have never trained with BJ. In fact I have only ever really talked to BJ one time & it was the same day he won the mundials. I talked to him right after he won his semifinal. I was only 17 and I had just won 2 medals in the juvenile division. He was very cool, I wished him good luck. I would love to train with BJ, in fact I think I am going to try to make it happen this year.

you definately should. you can help eachother out alot i'm sure. his pressure game is really second to none for his weight. bj is really unique in the way he uses his whole body equally and has incredible sensitivity to take away space by any means possible. the only other person i have seen with the same degree of technical sensitivity to take away space on top is the one and only rickson. bj gets alot of praise for his guard game and incredible flexibility but i actually think his top game is better. i credit alot of my passing game to him and jd. i was lucky enough to get to train with him alot as a blue and purple belt.

    hello,

had never heard of anyone describing him in this way. is there something unusual about his top game (in the way his guard game is thought to be unusual)?

    thanks

i love both bj and joe, but honestly i think it migh be a bad match up for stevenson.stevenson is more explosive and has better endurance and wrestling(probably) but bj i think has the upper hand standing and on the ground plus bj is so flexible he is almost impossible to take down... should make for an interesting fight

I'm right there with you Bevois. I have spent a lot of time with Joe in Vegas, training and hanging out and I am just a huge BJ fan. It will be hard to watch one of them lose, but I guess either way I will be happy for the winner.
