SO I hear SHERDOG SUCKS...

    Sat, 2008-01-26 14:21 — GAZZY

I've been hearing from so many random directions lately that Sherdog's forum sucks and it's nothing but a bunch of soap opera drama..

please express your deepest feelings, or experiences about Sherdog here.. and DONT HOLD BACK PLZ! .. i've never been there, everytime I was about to register, someone told me not to bother.. so I didn't..

    discuss.

You trust someone else's impression more than your own? You don't have to register to observe the forums for yourself.

As most people know I also post on Sherdog in the grappling and stand up forum (My screen name is Jiu-Jitsu cop). As stated above there are alot of noobs there but also some very knowledgable people. I come here to OTM for many reasons but I find that this forum has alot of info on BJJ. I would like OTM to also have a stand up forum as I like MT. I used to know Jeff Sherwood and Garrett Poe and I know that they sold Sherdog to a company several years ago. I find that OTM has less trolls and more top notch competitors posting here. Both forums work together at promoting MMA and BJJ to the world. Thanks to everyone involved. :)

PS. I always enjoy speaking with SB on Sherdog and he is a good guy with alot of knowledge.

    No, you are!

heh, you're mature and diplomatic as well! Btw, I just finished BLET and am about to be sworn in at the agency I've been at for nearly a decade as a Detention Officer/Resident Supervisor(latter is a work release position).

Deputy SB; next stop ... Arrest Processing.:(

i think its mma section is pretty bad. the grappling section is really good. i actually prefer sherdog over most of the other grappling forums except maybe mma.tv and grapplersguide. i just remember coming here thinking i would get alot interesting perspectives on grappling and grappling arts. but i instead i got something about gazzy's ass and gazzy myspace war. so no sherdog is cool there are alot of cool topics in their grappling section.

Well, any forum has it's strengths and weaknesses and though we have a cadre of mods it is just not enough on at any one time to really consistently stem the flow of trouble makers(insincere shit stirrers) at any given time. When we're on and posting, reading, like anyone else, we just do what we can. The MMA section is the entry spot for many new posters; new to the sport and new to internet posting sometimes. It's not surprise that when they conflict with the more knowledgeable and jaded posters that intolerance, immaturity and ego causes clashes that oftne end in one or both being dubbed or banned.

We often have to select new guys and gals since some mods take it TOO seriously and start hating to log on. Believe it or not, having that perspective can be a bit annoying when you're used to loggin on and simply enjoying yourself. They get burned out.

One thing though ... due to the volume and worldwide membership, there is almost always somebody on to interact with and that is something few forums can match with Sherdog.

Okay :o I could be just a little high right now as it is the 4th of July. :) It does serve me right as when I am at work I read trainee's papers and correct them on their English, then I get on forums and I can't spell my name correctly.

    hello,

there doesn't seem to be anything INHERENTLY wrong with sherdog.com.

they do have a huge amount of info over there. what many seem to have issue with is the amount of negativity associated with thier forums, and bias associated with many of thier articles.

to put this into perspective, we can compare OTM with SHERDOG.

otm forums require little or no moderation simply because the discussions here tend to focus more on facts of a situation rather than how everyone FEELS about those facts. sherdog on the other hand seems to attract individuals who are a little more concerned with how they are percieved (right vs wrong) than with the subject of any given thread.

overyone on the forums has witnessed "flaming wars". these are usually started when an individual says something another disagrees with. it quickly degenerates into a "tit for tat" arguement that is no longer concerned with advancing any serious discourse or even exploring the facts of a situation. such "flaming wars" are usually concerned with "defeating" one another. "tastes great" "less filling" "you got your chocolate in my peanut butter" "you got your peanut butter on my chocolate".

as far as bias in reporting, well, there are always biases. the question becomes one of objectivity. sherdog has demonstrated a few times an inability or unwillingness to separate personal views from the situation at hand.

a hypthetical (HYPOTHETICAL FOLKS) situation might resemble something like this:

article "fighter pay in the ufc". such an article might attempt to examine the economic forces that contribute to the pay decisions the ufc makes. noone would really have a problem with this. what would become an issue is the writer/author of the article placing value judgements on the individuals involved (such as danawhite). if the author is declaring danawhite unscrupulous or greedy or stupid, and sherdog is running the article as written, it does become a problem.

anyone who surfs the net runs into articles of every sort that lack objectivity. it happens. when a community (such as sherdog) percieve this lack of objectivity as normal AND it contributes to flaming wars on thier forums AND such flaming wars are not "moderated", we end up with a site that "sucks".

"sucks" is a bit subjective. everyone differs at least slightly on what "sucks". it becomes easy to apply such a term as a blanket description to something like a site (even sherdog, hahahahaha!!).

sherdog has a decent store, they do have a lot of articles, they have the fight finder. even most of the articles are decent. the forum over there does need some work. but that is not entirely the fault of sherdog. that lies with the forum members.

the original question asks about opinions of the sherdog forum. one simply has to decide what one wants from a site and then find one that delivers. sherdog has a huge number of members, so there must be a large number of individuals who enjoy thier forum.

those that do not enjoy it, tend to end up on other forums....

gee, can we think of any GREAT jiujitsu/mma forums?

    more to follow

    hello,

now let us examine OTM. otm also has a good store, good articles, and a good forum.

one of the things that sets otm apart from a site like sherdog, seems to be.... what we will call.... professionalism.

scotty, gumby and bevois tend to try to leave thier personal opinions out of things, but will answer direct questions. this seems to lend itself to a better forum, as they set the tone. otm has had a couple "flaming wars" but nothing of epic proportions. even with all the joking that goes on, the members (ah ha, the members...) are very quick to get right back to the point of a thread or question.

by way of percentage, otm has a large number of high level (elite) individuals that contribute regularly to the forums and they help provide a civil environment as well as keeping the focus on the exchange of knowledge.

the question of whether sherdog forum "sucks" or not really must be answered by each individual.

this skull finds sherdog forums to be a waste of time. too much arguement and too little information. otm is a much better forum. higher quality.

    hope this helps gazzy.

    thanks

I belonged to Sherdogs forums as Jiu-Jitsu cop. I do not go there very often anymore as there are too many young people jsut talking shit on there. I used to talk to Jeff Sherwood and Garret Poe who owned Sherdog. They sold the business over a year ago but they still run it. In my opinion there are just too many young idiots on there. But on the flip side there are some good people there also.

Actually Sherdog had prob. the best MMA forums on the net about 5 years ago. Then there came the sudden popularity of the UFC because of TV exposure. The UFC successfully marketed itself to the "Just Bleed" young rebellious generation. So therefore the fad was in and now what used to be great a great MMA forum is now teaming with that demographic.

I think they like the controversy so they let things go. perhaps controversy bering views to their site??

I dont go to the afore mentioned website anymore.. it was started by a particular person and supported by that person's jiu jitsu team. anyone not from their team usually gets pushed around. seen it happen, and it's happened to me. that place is a shit hole. love David Jacobs tho :)

    mma.tv... it's ok I guess...

    Dayyyyyy-UM!

Sherdog does not suck. You just need to keep in mind what you are looking for when you come there.

Due to the volume of noob posters, many of whom were introduced to MMA just since the debut of TUF(which is great in many aspects in terms of exposure) but bad for most long term fans of MMA/NHB, we have true noobs to not only the internets but MMA as well which is a great smokescreen for the waves of Crave online posters and other trolls who basically aren't used the restrictions we have on Sherdog. They don't care for the rules we try to enforce due to the ever increasing amount of kiddies who reg there and sponsors who pay to advertise there, adn basically come there to agitate and stir shit before fallin asleep each night with their hands in their underoos. Yeh, we ban some guys cuz their brother also posts from their computer and he's retarded but sometimes we have to do stuff like that.

Yeh, it's changed from the "ole days" but for anyone earnestly looking for info, stats or good news articles, the info is there. Lots of the guys who posted regularly in the old days have their own forums now, big and small. Some write for Sherdog and other sites now, a few have actually gone on to be fighters and grapplers over the years. Most are just fans like me unless they "grew up", got married, graduated college or high school and moved on from our niche community. Well, it used to be a niche commuity.

I'll never understand how people let those silly ass trolls ruin a forum for them. I guess you see what you either expect or desire. I mod there to support my first and main source of MMA news AND to maintain a tiny portion of involvement in the sport. Met some cool people, lots of assholes. I'm old, fat and not athletically inclined but I like the sport, respect the athletes, promoters and other entities such as Gumby, Scotty, OTM, NHBgear, Sherdog, MMA.TV, Gazzy, etc ... I do what I can and right now that's pitchin in on Sherdog.

Hell, it was a hoot meeting Sam of NHBgear, Scotty and Gumby up in Concord ... but that's just me. You guys are part of grappling and mma history imo, whether you want to be or not due to your company, and your great dvd's which chronicle much of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experiences fromthe beginning til now.

Hell, I can remember comin here when it'd be me and Lorenzo posting all night. Well, me, him and the porn bots. Anyways, I love Sherdog and owe alot to the stuff I learned on there about the sport of MMA over the last 5 or so years. Eternal gratitude to Jeff, Garrett and DMF.

Anyways, sorry to hear so many negative remarks regarding Sherdog; I'll catch y'all over here whenever I can. I actually would love for some of y'all to drop in over on the grappling technique forum if you have some free time. I sure would love to have had some of y'alls' input on a few threads I contributed to ove the last few months regarding JJ.

    Also, "Hi". :D
