OTM's Shayna Baszler wins via "twister" last night on Showtime!

    Sun, 2008-04-06 08:25 — Bevois

I interviewd Shayna before the ADCC last May and we talked about how much she loves going for twisters in grappling tournaments. She then went on to successfully win via twister at the Team USA Grappling trials in June and then submitted Keiko Tamai last night at ShoXC on Showtime. Tamai is a Japanese MMA veteran with over 30 fights to her credit. OTM's Bruce Hoyer is a longtime friend and training partner of hers and he also posts here, so hopefully he can give us his input. "The Queen of Spades" also called out Tara LaRosa after her win last night, which would set up a showdown between two longtime friends of OTM and two of the top women in the sport. Congrats to Shayna on the slick win!

Not trying to start anything, so in the end no biggie. But I agree with you guys 100%, why would he get that way, it was a beautiful fight!! Did anyone else notice what I am talking about? Like I said all I could hear was her, so there is plenty of room for error on my half.
Either way it was a great fight, so Shayna if you are reading...Killer fight girl! Keep it up!

First of all, I would like to say, thanx to everyone for the compliments on the fight. I am glad you guys watched, even more glad that you guys were entertained. I am a longtime lurker on the OTM forums, but decided I should probably post on this one to clear a few things up.

First off, Josh was NOT mad about the sub finish, he was giving me a hard time because all I talked about training for this fight was how I wanted to stand with her for at least the 1st round. The entire time I had her back, all my corners were screaming at me was "let her up, Shayna!!" He was giving me a hard time for blatantly ignoring my corner and throwing the gameplan out the window. He wasn't mad at ALL, just joking around, as is his way.

Secondly, Josh IS a trainer of mine. I often travel out to Cali and train with him. I am in CONSTANT communication, and he sends me syllubuses (syllabi?) along with videos to help with instruction in between times. I video myself, send it back to him, he critiques and then sends vid back. True, I train with Mica and Bruce, and they are still my trainers back home, but I consider him to be just as much a trainer as well. He has done much in the way of helping me with EVERYTHING. Sponsors, diet, supplements, training, weight lifting, mic work, mentality. Anyone that can't see a CLEAR difference in the way my fighting has changed since I started training with him is blind or knows nothing about fighting. He is nothing but giving and NEVER asks for anything back except that I perform my best. Not only is he a real coach, he is a GREAT coach, and an even better friend. Anyone can feel free to not like him, but I won't let him be called creepy or anything of that sort, just for helping my career. Also, for the record, Ginelle actually lives and trains at OC Shootfighting under Josh, and Megumi is his very first student from when he was living in Japan.

That being said, I don't want you guys to think I am pissed off or anything, just had to clear that stuff up. At any rate, thanx for tuning in and being super supportive!! This forum rox and I'm looking forward to being a part of it!!

    TTT for the QoS.

And I DO expect something in return. Ass whippings handed out with extreme prejudice!

thanks for the post and letting us know what happened. I met Josh a few times and he was really cool with me. As I posted earlier I still like to give models massages at photoshoots ;).

Don't just lurk around here, post here and give us some of your insight into fighting. There is a really good group of people on this site with no 12 year old kids like on other sites (not to mention any names cough, Sherdog, cough).

The twister is awesome. I am glad Bravo invented it.

****discounts the fact that it has been used in wrestling for decades and appears on Sperry's early tapes.****

Yeah I can not help but to think the same thing. I should win one big fight, smoke some weed, rename a bunch of moves and make a bunch of money. :D:D

Great fight! She is a force. One question though...
At the end you can see that Josh Barnett (I assume her coach) was not too pleased. You could not hear him, but her commentary went something like:
"I know. But it was there so I took it."

    "Sorry"

What was that all about? Is he anti-twister?
    Thanks

Barnett's not even her real coach. He's actually kind of a creepy clinger that attaches himself to established female fighters via e-mail, then shows up at their fights. Instead of fighting last year, he showed up at Baszler, Marquez, Megumi, and a bunch of other girls' fights. "Hey I'm Josh Barnett, mind if I corner you?" It's kind of weird and groupy-like to be honest and it's also a selfish way for him to steal camera time. If you read the interview on the first page of this thread, you will see Baszler's real coaches are Aaron Hullinger and Amilcar Cipili, who are both Rigan Machado jiu-jitsu guys.

Who the HELL are you?!

You are making shit up for sure on this as clarified by Shayna and I have NEVER showed up at woman's fight and said "Mind if I corner you?". I have used my influence for benefit of the women I work with more than anything that has ever come back my direction. I don't get "publicity" by helping women fighters. I get satisfaction from helping awesome athletes get recognized.

I am coaches for all of the above mentioned and have had several other women either approach me for training and have worked with briefly in the past.

Why don't you give us your real name since you seem to be so sure of your facts to make comments like this?

sorry for the misunderstanding. MMA is one of those weird sports where fighters do train with various camps and coaches. people that come from boxing backgrounds never train with rival camps and coaches and have a stronger sense of rivalry. for lack of better words MMA is kind of "incestual" in the way that it seems like a lot of people share the same coaches and training partners. Tito-Chuck used to be a good example. haven't Marquez and Baszler competed before? i think i saw a video somewhere of them grappling. how do you take sides with something like that, since you know both of their secrets? you're not the only one with open-ended associations, but it seemed more random for a higher calibur guy to only corner girls from all over the globe. i think it's safe to say that Fedor won't be cornering girls from South Dakota and Japan any time soon. maybe you corner guys too, but it's only the girls you corner that get any attention, which is unusual for a male dominated sport. the commentators for Pro Elite don't help either by describing you as a "big fan" of women's MMA. that may be true as many of us are, but a fan of women's fighting is not an ideal way to describe a coach with ambiguous associations. more simply, it's not the way i would describe a coach who competes at your level. by the way, since you seem to be sponsored by Affliction, maybe you'll fight the winner of Fedor and Sylvia. my apologies for the disrespect and good luck with your next fight at WVR.

The other day when I was reading this post on my phone, JT's "What Goes Around...Comes Around" was rocking on the restaurant radio and I just started giggling like a school girl. Now that Josh has evened the "burn score" with Bruce, I think we should all just sit back, relax, and enjoy a nice little interview Josh did awhile back! :DQUOTE]

Now see, it takes a real man to dress up like a baby and play with toys for a camera. Lets see any of YOU pull off Depends....

After being in Japan for years almost NOTHING embarasses me...except after watching Bruce try to do pull ups. Maybe Shayna slobbering on our Motion Master bag....naw that was just funny.

Josh, welcome to the forum :)

wow, you've really been hyping up ur girl all over the place! Coach and PR in one! sweet deal!

She should compete at the GQ in Jersey, June 27th-29th. I'll be there in the women's PRO division, 129.9 bracket.

Haha. Slobbering on the motion master........I'll chalk that up to the feral and rabid lusts of battle that you awakened in me.

And the GQ sounds like fun.....129.9 does NOT sound like fun, however. I believe if I attend that, I'll be up a division.

    Shayna and drinking?

Gazzy - been a while but yeah, someones gotta sound the horns. She's doing big things but we need the WORLD to know about it.

You'd have no problem with her getting drunk though! It's something she is assuredly a Black Belt at!

Going 129.9 eh? That should bea good weight for you. Hey I eblieve you asked me to come by the boards a while back but little did you know, I have always been here! Muahaahaha

    Shayna - What? 129.9 doesn't seem like fun? :p

I can't wait to see you also slobber/spit on: medicine balls, heavy bags, throwing dummies, free weights....this why when you come back down I'll have paper towels on alert and you'll be rolling with people I don't like. Im not getting soaked in spittle!

    Ok

That's right. As Bevois said I am OG to this forum and actually to the OTM guys as well. Ask Gumby. LIkely more OG than "Lurch" Hoyer too.

Hey, the JT is to balance out the -Mastodon, Slayer, Bolt Thrower, Death, Children of Bodom, Symphony X, Maiden, Megadeth, Misfits, Arch Enemy, Sepultura, etc (list goes on)- so I don't kill folks at random especially those who can't see too well. ;)

Actually "Ol Dirty Socks" (I have seen 'em) is good to the QoS. She's a handful and then some. Her head swells so big Bruce has to grease the doorjambs for her to get through. Then there's all the prima-donna stuff, slobbering on the equipment, whining about corn rows, drunkedness...I could go on! LOL!!!:D

We just do what we can to keep our "Queen" in the lifestyle she is accustomed too. We are all not worthy.

You think a little "Ground Cobra Twist"/"Twister" was something? You ain't seen shit yet.

And having bad eyesight isn't all that bad Brucey. They still let you ref fights I read.

wow, it looks like Shayna was toying with her opponents in both the USA grappling trials video and the ShoXC fight video. she is more fun to watch than 90% of the fighters out there, man or woman. great stuff. maybe next time, she'll submit someone with an electric chair or a banana split!

that's like saying coach George Karl got mad at Carmello Anthony for going for a dunk instead of a lay up, because he has bad blood with Michael Jordan. FYI, Jordan didn't invent the dunk and Bravo didn't invent the twister! LOL
