Breaking News: Fedor Confirms Sylvia Fight

    Tue, 2008-04-08 12:25 — Scotty

Top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will fight Tim Sylvia on July 19. The Russian mixed martial arts champion confirmed the bout to Sherdog.com on Tuesday.

"[Sylvia] is a good fighter, a strong fighter, the former UFC heavyweight champion, which is important," Emelianenko said via telephone from Stary Oskol, Russia. "I am looking forward to fighting him and training hard for this fight."

While Emelianenko was short on details, Sherdog.com has learned through sources close to the negotiations that Fedor-Sylvia would headline a card tentatively scheduled for the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, the home base of HDNet Fights.

HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon declined to comment on the report, however sources indicate the bout will air on the Mark Cuban-owned network and is rumored to be promoted by Affliction, a clothing brand closely tied to MMA.

Affliction had been connected with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, however a June 28 Las Vegas date has since been discarded.

Emelianenko, a 31-year-old sambo practitioner, has faced criticism from media and fans alike after a string of fights against less than stellar competition. Sylvia would represent the Russian's first ranked opponent since his unanimous decision over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic nearly three years ago.

Widely regarded as the top heavyweight fighter in the world, Emelianenko (27-1-0, 1 NC) was recently freed from a letter of intent binding him to the now-defunct M-1 Global promotion.

Sylvia, 32, is coming off a submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in February at UFC 81. After a spirited performance that saw him batter his foe at will with strikes, Sylvia (24-4-0) eventually fell victim to a classic Nogueira come-from-behind performance and succumbed to a guillotine choke early in the third round.

Wow, I really hope this fight happens and that something doesnt happen between now and then to cancel it! Fedor's #1 in my book and I think he will dominate Sylvia! Cant wait to see it!

Hey I think fedor will win but he has said in the past that he is not a good match up with Silvia. Being very tall is an advantage to Silvia in this fight but I still think Fedor will win.

The last guy Fedor fought, Hong Man Choi was 7'2" and was an experienced K-1 striker. Fedor's also beaten a 6'11" multiple time K-1 champion in Semmy Schilt. Both Choi and Schilt are taller than Sylvia and they are much better strikers.

Those are K-1 fighters. As good as Schilt is... he is not an MMA fighter, and I won't even talk about Choi. Tim is a pretty well rounded fighter, and he's got a really good sprawl. This should help him out, and I think he'll hang in there way longer than Choi.

I really wanna see Tim beat Fedor just to piss Randy off, but Fedor is still number one, and he'll find a way to win.

i dont think it will be an easy fight for fedor, but im gonna call tim winning the first round with strikes then fedor comes out in the second round and takes sylvia down then sub by kimura for fedor...fedor 2nd round by kimura

Glad to see Fedor getting some fights!

Sylvia has an awkwardness that usually works to his advantage and he's got a puncher's chance, but Fedor is so well rounded, IMO, Tim would really have to get lucky to win!

This fight will end via armbar in the first round.

Agreed, but I think the sub will be a kneebar; just for something different.
