WEC 42 - Torres vs. Bowles (August 9, 2009)

    Mon, 2009-08-10 23:36 — Bevois

On Sunday, August 9, 2009 the WEC returns to Sin City with WEC 42 - Torres vs. Bowles. The event will take place at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event will feature a match between the #1 and #2 ranked bantamweight fighters in the world as Miguel Torres puts his WEC bantamweight title on the line against Brian Bowles.

Torres vs. Bowles was originally scheduled for WEC 40 in April, but that bout was nixed when Bowles was forced to withdraw due to a back injury just a few weeks before the event. Bowles was replaced by Top 10 bantamweight Takeya Mizugaki, whom Torres defeated in a 25-minute, 5-round war. Bowles who trains out of the Hardcore Gym in Athens, Georgia (which was once home to UFC star Forrest Griffin) had earned his title shot after compiling an perfect 7-0 professional MMA record with his most recent win earning "Submission of the Night" honors at WEC 27 in December, when Bowles was able to submit Will Ribeiro with a third round Guillotine Choke. He will finally step into the cage with WEC bantamweight champion Torres on Sunday night.

Torres is a disciple of the late, great Carlson Gracie Sr. and earned his black belt in jiu-jitsu from Carlso Gracie Jr. in September 2008. To date, he is easily one of the world's top ranked pound-for-pound fighters who boasts a gaudy 37-1 professional MMA record. 6 of those victories have come since he joined the comfy confines of the WEC in September 2007. After winning the WEC bantamweight title with a submission victory over Chase Beebe in February 2008, Torres has defended his title 3 times. The first title defense was against Yoshiro Maeda at WEC 34, the second came against Manny Tapia at WEC 37 last December, and the third was against Mizugaki at WEC 40 in April.

The main card, which will be televised, also includes two other exciting bantamweight bouts. One will be a #1 contender's bout between Joseph Benavidez and Dominick Cruz. The winner will face the winner of Torres vs. Bowles later this year. The other bantamweight bout will feature former bantamweight #1 contender Mizugaki and former featherweight #1 contender Jeff Curran. In the lightweight division, two former collegiate wrestling stars will battle as Division III All-American Ricardo Lamas faces NAIA All-American Danny Castillo in the lightweight division. Then in featherweight action, former featherweight #1 contender Leonard Garcia will look to rebound against Midwestern native Jameel Massouh, who has a lengthy MMA record of 21-5. WEC 42 will be televised live on VERSUS tonight at 9 p.m. EST / 6 p.m. PST.
