Carlos Gracie Sr.
From OTMWiki
Carlos Gracie was the brother of Hélio Gracie. The brothers are credited with founding the Brazilian martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He learned Judo from Mitsuo Maeda, and in turn taught the art to his brothers Gastão Jr., Jorge, and Helio Gracie. In 1925, the brothers opened their first jiu-jitsu academy in Brazil, marking the beginning of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A skilled practitioner in his own right, he fought vale tudo to prove the effectiveness of the brothers' art. Eventually, he left the challenge matches up to his other brothers, most notably Helio, and managed them as they fought.
His son Carlson Gracie received his black belt from him, and came to be one of the most respected exponents of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Vale-tudo/Mixed Martial Arts. Carlos also is credited for creating the legendary "Gracie Diet", which consisted of certain foods to be eaten in combination in order to better balance the body for life. He also fathered the most children out of the original Gracie brothers, fathering 21 in total. A few of his offspring are famous Gracies such as Carlos Jr, Carlson Gracie Sr, and the legendary Rolls Gracie (who was raised by his uncle Helio). Carlos lived a long life, dying in 1994 at the age of 94.
