The upsidedown or inverted guard was initially popularized by Gracie Barra fighter and Mundial Champion, 'Roleta,' and was later further developed by his student, Marcio 'Pe de Pano' Cruz (Gracie Barra), who possessed more of a submission-oriented style than his instructor. Many modern grapplers utilize this position both as a transition, as well as a guard unto itself. One notable American grappler who makes use of this position is up-and-coming purple belt, Ryan Hall of Team Lloyd Irvin. Another American known for his inverted guard in gi competition is Nick Diaz of Caesar Gracie's team. For videos of the inverted guard, try Mundial tapes featuring Marcio Cruz and Roleta.

Many sweeps and submissions originate from this versatile position. Triangle chokes, oma platas, and armlocks are the most common submissions, but many leglock opportunities exist in a no-gi situation.
