The Gracie family or Gracies, refers to the lineage of Gastão Gracie, a Brazilian politician. Many of the men in Gastão's lineage, both alive and deceased, are well-known martial artists, especially as founders and practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and upholders of the Gracie challenge. Apart from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, many of the Gracies have also had considerable success in mixed martial arts, vale tudo, and submission wrestling competitions.
The most recent family champions have been Rolls Gracie and Rickson Gracie. The most successful current active Gracie is Roger Gracie, reigning CBJJ World Super Heavyweight Champion, CBJJ Pan American Open-weight Champion and ADCC 88-98kg and Openweight Champion.
The Gracie family traces their lineage to George Gracie, a Scottish immigrant to Brazil who emigrated in 1810.[1]
