Master Renato Tavares and Piet Wilhelm
Born September 27, 1974 in The Republic of Singapore, Singapore, Piet Wilhelm is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm. Piet is the first family member of the Wilhelm’s to enter the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The Singapore native was a three-sport star in high school-- All-State swimmer, All-State track and field, and USMMA Smoker's Champion. Piet received a full athletic scholarship to college to swim and row on a crew team for a degree in Marine Transportation. He began studying Karate when he was five years old and gave it up for boxing and MMA.
In 1996 he went into the Marine Corps to serve his country in the infantry field and later became the head Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor at a Headquarters Battalion. As a U.S. Marine at the time Piet competed in Mixed Martial Arts events under different names in order to maintain his military status. After his honorable discharge Piet and his wife Summer opened their second MMA School in Tulsa, Oklahoma later converting it to an MMA/BJJ Academy.
With over 15 years of training martial arts, Piet Wilhelm is considered by many to be one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructors in the Midwest. He is the only jiu-jitsu teacher in Oklahoma who has served in the military to lead troops in and out of combat using his experiences from martial arts. Piet received both his blue belt and his purple belt from Henrique Stefani who happens to be a black belt from legendary NAFA founder Renato Tavares. After Henrique relocated his family to Canada, Piet became a student of Renato Tavares from American Top Team, where he earned his brown belt.
Since Piet and his wife Summer have been in Tulsa, they have lead many people to success. They are the founders of The Triton Fight Centers, where many mixed martial arts fighters and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players come to train. Piet continues to work with his team of students as a coach, manager, and friend. Piet has remained loyal to his coaches and the Renato Tavares Association, where LOYALTY and RESPECT are some of the most admirable qualities.
Piet has been teaching in Tulsa for the past 4 years. He is proud to be representing Renato Tavares at the Triton Fight Center. He is currently a brown belt instructor with 4 stripes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a brown belt in Judo under Pat Burris. Piet has awarded 5 black shirts in the Triton Fighting System. His deep understanding and respect for the tradition of the Gracie family motivates his students to:
• Incorporate new techniques in order to improve the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu • Learn self-defense technique in order to defend themselves against hostile aggression • Excel in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA competition
Piet has provided instruction and knowledge for others to open their own martial arts academies throughout Oklahoma. Piet and his wife were the first to come up with a structured MMA curriculum for the Tulsa area. They provide a unique format, which makes learning easier and comprehensive.
Recognized and respected equally for his outstanding fighting and competitive accomplishments, as well as his technical, teaching and coaching expertise, Piet also is known as a giving person willing to help those out in need.
