The competition-Jiu-Jitsu calendar is taking a well-deserved recess after the thrilling year of 2011.

But that doesn't mean the IBJJF is slacking off; the sport's governing body took it upon itself to release the spanking new Jiu-Jitsu Rule Book before the turn of the year.

Nearly two years in the making, the rules underwent a complete overhaul, gaining photos, charts and illustrations that elucidate all the more clearly the guidelines to which competitors and event promoters alike will be expected to adhere.

There has been a lot of drama lately both on and off the mat due to some new rules set by the IBJJF. The understanding of the rules in BJJ has always been a riddle for me. After years of competing both in the US and in Brazil I never really understood them other than what Ralph Gracie told me in my first 3 tournaments at white belt. "If you tap the guy you win, if you don't you don't win." That was Ralph's advice long ago. Just play your game he told me. Problem was that if you didn't tap the guy you didn't know if you won or not till the referee raised raised an arm.

Conor Huen's controversial DQ at No Gi Worlds!

On Saturday, lightweight MMA fighter Conor Heun entered the World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship in Long Beach, California. After applying a toe hold on his opponent, Huen says his Brazilian opponent verbally tapped (in Portuguese), but not recognizing the term, he did not release the submission. The two nearly came to blows, and referee Anjinho awarded the match to the opponent, on disqualification for failing to stop.

A review of the tape appears to show the match going out of bounds and the referee breaking the match, in Portuguese.
